The Symptoms of Anxiety

The symptoms of anxiety are many and varied.

Unfortunately, many of these symptoms are also associated with a variety of other illnesses so it’s no wonder that many anxiety sufferers are sometimes convinced that they are suffering from something ‘more serious’.

Whilst it is always sensible to see your doctor as a precautionary measure if you are at all concerned about any of your symptoms (or if you want a ‘proper’ diagnosis of your anxiety) it is also helpful for you to know the general symptoms associated with anxiety.

These are some of the symptoms that are most commonly associated with anxiety:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sweating
  • Tightness around the head
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Racing heart
  • Blurred vision
  • Pins and needles
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach and intestinal upset

They are probably the ones that first come to mind when the word ‘anxiety’ is mentioned but other symptoms can include:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Trouble relaxing
  • Loss of interest in anything
  • Being unable to sleep or constantly feeling tired
  • Not being able to feel emotion about anything
  • Lack of interest in anything
  • Constantly worrying
  • Constantly feeling anxious
  • Feeling irritable

People often worry about these symptoms and sometimes mistake them for signs of an actual physical illness. If you’ve ever wondered why you get these symptoms the answer is that they are caused by your brain, which sends lots of messages down nerves to various parts of your body when you are anxious.
